How
will this program help my agency?
Your agency will be part of a prestigious national program that will
give your frontline managers the skills and tools they need to improve
their ability to manage quality/practice outcomes and to help the
nurses and therapists they manage provide “evidence based best
practice” geriatric care to their older patients.
To enhance management practice, front line nurse and therapy managers
will gain skills in team building and improving communication among
your staff, patients, and caregivers, and physicians. Your agency
ultimately benefits from improved satisfaction and patient outcomes.
How much time will the program require
per week?
Each participant will spend an average of two to three hours a week on
course activities, including:
- ‘Seat time’ on the computer.
- Time to integrate evidence-based
best practices into daily practice with their clinical team.
- Participation in periodic coaching
calls with CHAMP faculty.
- Communicating with other
participants via the CHAMP listserv.
Attendance at a face-to-face
workshop(s) is also required:
In addition to the individual
participant requirements, your Senior Leader is:
- Strongly encouraged to attend the
face-to-face workshop.
What is the Fee for the Program?
Thanks to a generous grant from The Atlantic Philanthropies,
participating agencies only have to pay $2,000 per team for each course.
Is the VNAA CHAMP program open to VNAs
only?
All Certified homecare agencies, including non-profits and for-profits,
are encouraged to apply.
Will my agency receive recognition for
participation?
Yes! VNAA CHAMP is a national program that aims to dramatically improve
homecare practice. Upon completion of the course, we will provide you
with a template press release that you may use in your local media
community. In addition, your agency will receive completion
certificates and recognition items that include the designation of your
agency as a “CHAMP Agency”.
Will this program help with staff
retention?
The program is designed to enhance the management and team-building
skills of your frontline nurse managers. More engaged and effective
nurse managers translate to a more satisfied staff.
How can I support my CHAMP team?
We urge you to establish opportunities within your agency for
recognizing your CHAMP team’s participation and accomplishments, and
maintain a keen interest in your team’s progress over the course of the
program. Regular bi-monthly meetings with your CHAMP team are strongly
encouraged, and a designated senior leader is encouraged to attend the
face to face workshop.
Is the VNAA CHAMP program geared only
towards the novice frontline nurse manager?
Frontline nurse and therapy managers of all experience levels will find
this training useful. The curriculum is designed to embed
evidence-based learning that nurses/therapists can directly apply to
their daily practice.
Does the program allow opportunity to
interact with other homecare agencies?
Frontline managers from other
agencies across the nation will be participating in the program and
there will be a number of ways to interact with other managers
nationwide, including an email listserv, face to face workshops, and
group coaching calls
Will there be opportunities to
evaluate my agency’s progress?
You will be able to track your
interventions and progress over time. Online measurement tools will
help you track the progress of the nurses/therapists you manage over
time and compare your progress to other CHAMP participants.
Will I have to participate at a
scheduled time each week?
The on-line E-learning course, chart
reviews and work with your staff may be done at a time of your
choosing. The face to face workshop(s) and coaching phone calls will be
at scheduled times.
What do I do if I have a problem or
question?
A number of support systems are in
place to meet your needs. You will be able to contact the program
instructors with questions about the content areas, assignments and
general questions about the curriculum. You will have contacts to help
you with the logistical issues, online E-learning site problems or any
other general question.
Who in my organization will be involved?
This program is specially tailored
towards frontline managers. To provide the support they will require,
the commitment of top leadership at your agency will be critical. Other
participants may include clinical educators and quality improvement
specialists within your organization.
Is a computer required to participate?
A computer with internet access is
needed to participate.
An individual email address for each
participant is also required.
Do I need a special computer or
internet connection to use the online E-learning course?.
VNAA CHAMP’s on-line E-learning
system was designed to accommodate the computer systems and internet
connections of a typical home health agency. Technical requirement are
as follows:
- Windows: Internet Explorer 5.5+,
Mozilla 1.2.1+, AOL 7+ (with Internet Explorer 5.5+ installed)
- Mac OS 8.6: Firefox 1.5 - 2.0

Computers that participants use to
access the course also need to have the following:
- Minimum screen resolution of 1024 x
768 pixels configured for 32-bit color or higher.
- Minimum Internet connection speed
of 56kbps (Higher bandwidth strongly recommended)
- A sound card and speakers are
recommended, but not required.

Will I need to have all my CHAMP team
members in place at the time of the application?
Yes. The number and composition of
your agency CHAMP team must be recorded on the application form.
